What is Art Psychotherapy and how does it work?

What is Art Psychotherapy?

Art Psychotherapy, also sometimes called art therapy, has been a recognised and profession since the 1940’s when it was developed to treat soldiers who had experienced trauma in WW2. It has been a regulated profession in the U.K and USA for many years. Properly qualified art therapists have undertaken both degree and post graduate level training and are regulated in Australia by PACFA and ANZACATA. As a clinical member of PACFA I have demonstrated that I have undertaken the right training and have the supervision and experience to operate at the highest level.

How does it work?

The art making process helps to externalise thoughts and feelings that might be hard to talk about. Together the art psychotherapist will work with you or your young person to explore and find solutions to difficulties. Art Psychotherapy provides a means of expression that ensures that no one is left behind when it comes to accessing high quality psychological support. Even those that can’t find the words.

LGBTQIA+

We recognise that members of our LGBTQIA+ community experience significantly greater risks of mental health difficulties with young people being especially vulnerable. At Alchemy, support of the LGBTQIA+ community is an important aspect of our service. Dani has worked with many young people who are gender and sexuality diverse and understands some of the unique difficulties they may face.
